Ocean Terminal ( Leith Docks )

Project: Ocean Terminal

Lighting to complement Terence Conran's striking £120m Ocean Terminal in Leith was designed by Jonathan Spiers Associates in association with ALD.

The columns, which are conical and incorporate flat vertical tapered fin brackets, are all crowned with a blue LED beacon to delineate the boundaries of the Ocean Terminal site.

The light source for the lanterns, in single, double and triple head configurations, is metal halide. On the quayside the fittings used a blue metal halide lamp. This allowed a balance to be struck where a safe environment could be provided for the ground-level loading bay without interfering with the view beyond to the Firth of Forth. White metal halide was used on the quayside and car parks for its superior colour rendering properties.

The lanterns are designed to direct all the light downwards for maximum efficiency and a minimal contribution to skyglow.

Additionally, finger posts in stainless steel for interior use and mild steel for exterior use were also manufactured. These feature decorative cast aluminium 'spike' finials.

London Walkway

Client: Corporation of London

Consultant: W.S. Atkins

The re-lighting of the Riverside Walkway, intended to run continuously from Blackfriars Bridge to Tower Bridge, was designed to complement and reflect the original ornate Victorian plinths and columns situated along the Embankment.

The design, unique to this project, incorporates two royal sturgeons cast into the base, and an intricate coat of arms on the door. The lantern which reflects the features found on the originals, includes a substantial cast 'castellated' chimney, added to the original design specifically to meet the Planner's requirements.

Strict criteria were included in the contract by the consultants regarding the lighting distribution. A reflector was developed for this project which provided an extended light pattern to illuminate the walkway, and avoided unsightly 'shadows' appearing on the surface of the sphere.

The columns are made to be adjustable in height to account for variation in the wall level. All metal components were fully polyester powder coated, and the coat-of-arms highlighted in fine detail.

Additional work included full-height columns to the same design, special plinths, 'trellis' columns and the refurbishment of existing columns at London Bridge. Candela were contracted to remove, refurbish and replace these ornate - irreplaceable - lighting columns, and this was accomplished with the help of a Thames crane barge.

The columns were transported to our works, shot blasted and then hot zinc sprayed, followed by undercoat, top finish and highlighting.

The new lanterns incorporate the winged 'Peers Helmet' added to the Corporation's arms in 1539.

Glasgow Green

Glasgow Green is one of the oldest and historic parks in Scotland. It stretches from Saltmarket to High Court accross to the Calton and Bridgeton district, with the Clyde to the south.

Candela was approached by Glasgow City Council to create a column and lantern that would be both a striking feature and at the same time be harmonious with existing buildings such as the 19th Century " People's place " pictured above.

Following a prototype manufacture and installation such was its impact that over 120 of these units were ordered on this prestigious project.

Snow Hill, Birmingham

Project: Snow Hill, Birmingham

Authority: Birmingham City Council

The 'Broadway Aeroform' lantern and 'Bowman' column were selected as being 'the most appropriate modern lighting design' for the Birmingham Snow Hill Regeneration Project.

Simple, but with a striking style, the columns incorporate a 5M high pedestrian lantern as well as the 8M highway luminaire. To differentiate the two functions, 150W high pressure sodium lamps were used at high level, and metal halide 100W at 5M. Some 100 columns were installed during the project, the lighting being a key element of the regeneration scheme.

The lanterns were primarily selected for their decorative form, while also meeting stringent lighting specifications including a high IP rating, integral control gear and ease of maintenance. Lighting levels and uniformity were in accordance with British Standards.

A full structural analysis of the columns and brackets was carried out and submitted with the proposal.

The Bracings. Skegness Sea Front

Client: East Lindsey District Council

The Bracings at Skegness were virtually unused due to dilapidation and people's perception of danger from crime. To address this problem, and to enhance the town's sea-side resort facilities, the area was given a large - scale refurbishment.

The project budget was divided between groundworks, furniture and lighting. The seafront is less easily accessible at Skegness, and needed to be particularly attractive, and safe, to entice people across the divide between the town's seafront road and the beach areas.

The Bracings is a busy and pleasant holiday centre in which the lighting columns add their contribution by day and by night.

250W SON gear was used throughout providing a high level of illumination, excellent uniformity, and virtually zero upward light.

A complementary 6M tall column with a side-mount Broadway lantern was used on pathways throughout the project, and alongside the feature lake. The walkway along the shore was lit with columns having staggered lantern heights.

Coastal Locations.

Product development included consultations between Candela and the client on appropriate materials, processes and finishes for this coastal location.

Holyrood Road. Scottish Parliament

Client: Edinburgh City Council, Lothian & Edinburgh Enterprise Ltd

Design: The Paul Hogarth Company

Holyrood Road, formerly a through route to the Royal Park, now leads into the William Younger Dynamic Earth Centre and a new mall at the rear of the Parliament Precincts.

The design was intended to feature in a 'Grand Processional Way',

and to provide a strong vertical element. The design was completed and submitted prior to contract. The manufacturing process of 30+ columns was completed in three months.

Faithful to the Paul Hogarth design, the substantial 11M tapered columns have a unique lantern bracket arm system which used two pairs of stainless steel rods per arm. The non load-bearing rods attach to the column at decorative cast collars.

Each column has a base casting 1.8M tall, cast in ductile iron and fitted with a stainless steel chemically etched band inscribed EH 1999 and bearing the local authority's column identifier. Each column is designed to support a 4.5M banner and features a pedestrian lantern in certain locations.

The lower lantern uses a white metal halide lamp for improved colour rendition, in contrast to the golden yellow high pressure sodium road-light. Together these achieve a pleasing and functional night-time aspect.

It was a requirement of the local authority that the bases, which are cast from ductile iron, should be fitted and sealed to the column at our works to guarantee ingress protection. As with any project of this nature, full structural calculations were provided.

Client: Trafford Centre

Architect: Chapman Taylor Partnership

Consultants: WSP Consultants

Candela Light designed and manufactured 200 car-park columns and globe lanterns specifically for the Trafford Centre. A unique cast base was developed, incorporating both the Trafford Centre logo and a frieze showing the dome and pillars of the main centre building. This design was carried across to the bollards and railings which were manufactured by Candela Light for the car park, walkways and bus terminal areas.

The columns comprise of a structural steel shaft and base with a cast embellishment casting which was fitted on site.A large base casting of the same design was produced to enhance the CCTV camera columns throughout the site.

The railing panels at the bus terminals have a fully concealed fixing system for a seamless finish. The bollards were designed to be highly vandal resistant and have a galvanised steel tubular core, covered by the finely cast exterior.

Structural calculations formed a vital part of the Candela design brief. The location, wind loadings, CCTV cameras, banners and flower baskets all had to be considered in this process.

Our in-house design and production departments were able to meet all the demands and deadlines expected when working on a prestigious project of this scale.
